“The Villager” Extra Special Bitter

Our Hilton Centennial Tribute beer, The Villager, is being released on Friday, April 13th. It is an ESB, or Extra Special Bitter, an English-style Pale Ale. Hilton Village was developed in 1918, at the onset of a massive war effort. The shipbuilding industry in Newport News was blossoming, and there was a dire need for housing to support that growth. With tremendous vision and determination, leaders such as Homer L Ferguson and Frederick Law Olmstead presented a plan for an English style, Garden City development to the federal government. The concept was approved, and funded by the US government, and Hilton Village was developed from a 200 acre parcel in Warwick County. Hilton Village remains the oldest planned community in the United States today, and much of the original structure and charm remain today.

The Villager is a malt balanced pale ale, using the floor malted Maris Otter as the main barley component. Marris Otter is an English heritage variety that imparts a unique biscuit-like character to the beer. The copper color of our ESB is obtained through the addition of Caramel malt to the mash. The English malt profile is balanced with the American grown Williamette hops, which creates a great tie in to the English architecture and planning of Hilton Village. The Villager will greet you with an enticing biscuit aroma, that will lead to flavors of lemongrass and toast, followed by a noticeable but subtle bitterness that lingers on the palate. At 4.4% ABV and 32 IBU this ESB is quite sessionable. As they do in English pubs, simply walk into Tradition and say “give me a pint of your best!”
